Carlos Mínguez Carrasco on ArkDes’s current show Kiruna Forever

Installation view Kiruna Forever. Ph: Johan Dehlin

Following our series on cultural agitators in the architectural scene, Carlos Mínguez Carrasco, Head Curator at ArkDes the Swedish National Centre for Architecture and Design in Stockholm, tells us about the show Kiruna Forever, which celebrated an online vernissage on June 2nd. As a public institution, ArkDes is responsible for entangling discourses and materials relevant to architecture and urban design with Swedish representations. Kiruna Forever, in that sense, explores the relocation of the arctic town Kiruna due to massive mining. This complex and multifaceted story poses sharp questions about notions of heritage, extraction, and urban planning. Also, marking the end of the conversation, Mínguez Carrasco shares his views on the opportunities of curating (architecture) in the digital now that Covid-19 has imposed its accelerated implementation.

Mínguez Carrasco is an architect and curator based in Stockholm. He is Head Curator at ArkDes – the Swedish National Centre for Architecture and Design. Between 2012 and 2017 he was Associate Curator at Storefront for Art and Architecture in New York. He organized the 2016 Oslo Architecture Triennale with the After Belonging Agency and was Assistant Curator of OfficeUS, the U.S. Pavilion at the 2014 Venice Biennale. His texts have been published in different publications and journals such as Domus, Migrant, and Código and he is editor of various publications, including After Belonging (Lars Müller Publishers, 2016), OfficeUS Manual (Lars Müller Publishers, 2017) Bodybuilding (Performa, 2019), and Kiruna Forever (ArkDes and Arkitektur Förlag, 2020). He has taught at Columbia University GSAPP and lectured in different universities and cultural centers in Europe, Latin America, and the United States.

Kiruna Forever is on view until the 7th of February 2021. The exhibition is produced by ArkDes, the Swedish Centre for Architecture and Design. There is a parallel exhibition at Konstmuseet i Norr, Norrbotten’s new County Art Museum, located in Kiruna. Some of the works have jointly been specially commissioned and are on show simultaneously at both venues. More info at
