Casa Schendel by AR Arquitetos

Casa Schendel by AR Arquitetos

With a new light and translucent volume, Casa Schendel by AR Arquitetos intervenes in a 3.6-meter-wide existing single-family home. It is located in an old urban complex of terraced houses, and the project sought to expand and qualify its useful area, completely recreating the spatiality and interior atmosphere and marking its presence on the street.

Only two existing slabs were kept from the original house. A new independent wooden structure was added that runs autonomously around the perimeter between the sidewalls, redoing the façades and roof. The roof was raised by one meter to accommodate a studio with access to the terracea and views of the neighborhood.

Next to the new front façade, the staircase occupies a triple void that adds verticality to the interior, allowing light from the South and fresh air to circulate freely through the space between the floors.

The façades with wooden slats at full height fill the interiors with soft and diffused light, while the folding system, when open, results in the total integration of the room with the garden and the aedicula, an independent suite, in the background. It visually extends the depth of the house throughout the lot.
