Insect Aesthetic: Future Chocolates by Jisun Kim

Future Chocolates by Jisun Kim

A classic advent calendar often contains chocolate and day four of FestiveNESS does not disappoint with Future Chocolates by Seoul and London based designer Jisun Kim. However, these geometric shapes are not your classic dessert: they include a protein powder derived from insects. Can these aesthetically pleasing shapes—and their hard-to-resist substance, chocolate—help to change our eating habits?

Future Chocolates by Jisun Kim

Our meat production has a huge impact on global warming: it consumes large amounts of clean water and pollutes the land. Part of the solution is to think about new, sustainable ways of producing food. With this in mind, Kim designed five future chocolates that contain 10% of edible insect powder, one of the meat substitutes of the future. Supports and packages for the chocolate are made from acrylic and ceramic and reflect the insect’s form. The outer package that protects the chocolate is reminiscent of a cocoon. The project reflects an important concept in a simple and elegant design.
