The digital can be seen as a mere tool or a whole world in itself, but either way, it is definitely having its moment in this FestiveNESS pick. Material Exploration by Vitaly Grossmann and Vincent Schwenk is a project created for the development and engineering company Imat-uve. The animation features a playful, material world that represents the texture design and scanning competence of Imat. The limits between the real and the imagined converge in a mesmerizing mix of colors, shapes, and textures; and in this balance emerges a glimpse of future material possibilities.

Material Exploration by Vitaly Grossmann and Vincent Schwenk for Imat-uve
Imat-uve approached Vitaly Grossmann and Vincent Schwenk to create a playful material world for a trade show in Germany. Imat’s design department is not only in charge of creating and designing textures, but also scanning them for broader purposes in-house.
With Grossman’s and Schwenk’s love of working with textures, the challenge was to find the right balance between reality and abstraction. The idea was to create shapes and colors where the textures become alive. Nearly every texture was scanned and provided by Imat’s design department.
This short animation is more like a mood-film than a typical commercial work. The client gave the designers an open briefing and left them free to visualize Imat’s work and promote their new scanning department.
The animation is a result of a creative ping pong between client, designers, and collaborators that brought about its simulations, diverse assets, and set development. For the first time, Grossman and Schwenk teamed up with Superdesigners from Moscow. Their professional skills in the 3D clothing design software Marvelous helped to bring alive the textures. Moritz Schwind provided graphic support and Jürgen Branz created the sound that holds all the visuals together like glue.
